Surface-Mount Technology

Surface-Mount Technology refers to a type of component design where the leads of the component are soldered on top of a PCB. This is in contracts to through-hole where the leads are inserted through holes in a PCB and soldered on the opposite side.

In the image above, the battery retainer is the only surface-mount technology component shown — the other components are through-hole.
